Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's strategic communications advisor. It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the strategic communication adviser at White House. But through it all Schlapp has stayed focused on the mission in hand and has worked closely with White House's political and legislative affairs teams and policy shops, as well with the larger communications team to coordinate policy rollouts. In her current role she's been focusing on several topics, including safety at schools and opioids. At the moment, Schlapp does not deal too much with journalists. She gained attention after being named a candidate to replace Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough task in her position as the White House's advisor on strategic communications. Mercedes Schlapp is faced with an administration that is beset by numerous concerns, which includes the president's role as his own director of communications and Cabinet Secretaries who are caught up in the controversies surrounding their respective departments. Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focused on the mission at hand, working closely with White House's political affairs and legislative affairs departments and policy shops, as well in the communications department to coordinate policy rollouts. So far, her primary focus is on issues like security in schools, the opioid epidemic, trade, infrastructure as well as other topics. In her current position, Schlapp does not deal much with journalists. She did draw a flurry of attention in March when she was mentioned as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. It has been a battle that has been brutal. Schlapp has sided with Tony Sayegh who was also an aspirant. They began sparring in media. Schlapp claimed that after that the Washington Examiner ran a story which contained negative criticisms of Sayegh she sat down for a chat with Sayegh.
